Games Haven Monthly $1K Series 2018

It was great to see that the routine had started to settle in already, as 43 familiar faces gathered in the shop for our third $1K tournament on Sunday. As our 2nd Modern $1K tournament, we had high hopes for a meta shakeup, thanks to Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan which was Modern format and had just finished the week before with an incredibly diverse meta and plenty of high-level play on coverage.

Fascinatingly enough, the winning deck of the Pro Tour, Lantern Control, was nowhere to be found on our tables. While it is true that the decision trees of Lantern Control can be extremely complex, it might have just been that the motivation to have the freedom to eat dinner earlier outweighed everything else. Whatever the actual reason was, there was a collective sigh of relief on Round 2 as the players slowly realised that they would not be facing Lanterns of Insight that day.

The other decks of the Pro Tour, on the other hand, had a solid presence on Sunday. There were plenty of Mardu Pyromancer decks on the tables, the runner-up deck of the Pro Tour, and the power of Lingering Souls combined with Young Pyromancer was well and truly felt. Hilariously, there might have been more Bedlam Revelers yesterday then there ever were in any Standard event where Eldritch Moon was still legal. Is its price jump justified? Time will tell if Mardu Pyromancer continues to be a force in Modern while still keeping everyone’s new favourite Prowess Devil.

YOLO One (this writer refuses to call the Burning Inquiry-Hollow One decks by any other name), Death Shadow variants and BGx variants also popped up as expected. Death’s Shadow and BGx decks were always expected to some degree as they have been tried and tested, but the new gambler’s paradise of YOLO One was relatively uncharted waters. The deck that had been innovated by SaffronOlive before being improved by the Japanese and MTGO had its chance to showcase its explosive power on Sunday. Interestingly enough, more often than not it also managed to showcase its power of exploding the hands of opponents. Many functional keeps were completely and utterly ruined by a T1 Burning Inquiry from the other side on the play.

Rounding up the gauntlet were the usual suspects. 5C Humans, Affinity, Tron variants and Burn were present and raring to go. A special mention goes to Burn, as there were more Burn decks this time around than our previous Modern $1K in December, which could possibly be related to the gastronomical reason mentioned above, or perhaps many people just felt like throwing Lightning Bolts. Add a sprinkling of Scapeshift, a drizzle of Storm and a few rogue decks, and you have our metagame environment for Sunday. The banlist update is coming in a few hours time as of this writing, so we can only hope that whatever happens to Modern, it remains as diverse as it has been for a year.

It would be remiss of this writer not to mention the incredibly spooky occurrence that happened hours after the tournament had ended. During the tournament, Kelvin Chew had mysteriously, inexplicably, bafflingly, perplexingly decided to abandon his Bant Value deck to play Bogles. Unfortunately, he had to drop early because of a poor record, but many hours later, Bogles won GP Toronto. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

財神到~~~ DU DUDUDU DUDUDU DU DU~ Or something like that.

In the end though, the man of the day was definitely Felix Tse, a Bronze Pro who came down to claim an invite as a Pro Player. He put his invite to great use, piloting his Scapeshift deck expertly through the landscape, and after the dust had settled, he didn’t need to Seek very Far anymore, for he had Found his Tomorrow as the winner of our 3rd $1K event! Congratulations to Felix on a well-earned victory!

And now, for the Top 8 decklists as always.
