Mythic Championship Qualifier Richmond 2019

3rd August 2019

Suntec Convention Centre, Room 300-301

Once again, we were given the honour and privilege of hosting the 2nd tabletop Mythic Championship Qualifier, this time for Richmond instead of Barcelona. Also unlike the first MCQ, this MCQ was held with the Modern format where the previous one was Standard. 160 players attended the event, held fresh after a banlist update that saw Bridge From Below banned. What would that mean for the current boogeyman of Modern, Hogaak? Would we get dominated by undying 8/8s? The results might surprise you.

The line "Modern is a diverse format" is a line repeated so often that we're starting to get quite sick of it. The proof, however, is in the pudding. There were so many deck archetypes on Saturday that were less than 5 in number that it was more practical to instead count the metagame share for the few archetypes of which there were actually a lot, and then list the rest. The results of that glorious number crunch is as you see above.

By now, Tron being the most popular deck isn't a surprise anymore, having power and consistency in spades. Having a much more powerful toolbox in the form of access to the sideboard via Karn, the Great Creator also goes a long way towards cementing Tron's ability to adapt. Throw in the horror story of Mycosynth Lattice with Karn, and you have a pretty infuriating formula.

As feared, Hogaak did have the 2nd largest metagame share, but that isn't saying much when you had as many differing archetypes as we did. Still, the power of the deck is unquestioned despite the Bridge from Below ban, and what isn't shown in the metagame breakdown is that most of the Hogaak player scores were in the upper ends. Modern isn't safe from the boogeyman yet, kids. Don't leave home without your Leylines.

Phoenix builds making up a good percentage is nothing surprising either, given that it's the deck with the biggest reputation for going toe to toe with Hogaak as "the OTHER graveyard deck". Single-handedly making the case for banning Faithless Looting, the deck's ability to win faster than a Lightning Bolt out of nowhere is astounding. There is no other deck that can cast Faithless Looting, draw 2 Phoenixes, discard 2 Phoenixes, and consider that as advancing the game plan. Can you feel yourself drooling? Oh wait, that's me.

There were 2 occurrences that were slightly more eyebrow-raising. BGx grindy builds turned out to be more popular than expected - Hexdrinker is really putting in the work as a sleeper card from Modern Horizons. We've already seen the uptick in favourable opinions towards Hexdrinker from the pros these few months, but some things just need to be seen to be believed. Also, for Jund in particular, everyone's favourite pack war winner Wrenn and Six seems to be doing a lot more in practice than what seemed possible on paper. Legacy might still win in the put-W&6-to-good-use department by recurring Wasteland, but Modern seems to be a pretty good place for the dryad and her companion as well. Besides recurring Nurturing Peatland for incidental draw, accidentally being able to ping things like Young Pyromancer or Noble Hierarchs can go a long way. And the pretty tree lady only costs 2 mana.

Also, Urza. It simply had to be for the memes. We wouldn't have had a glorious 5 Urza combo players otherwise. Urza's combo potential had always been evident, and the new ThopterSword lists have more or less been stabilized by the pros. What is left, and what we saw on Saturday, was a deck that was even more obnoxious than the time where the deck's master was Tezzeret. An actual question asked from one Urza player to another (yes, by all the gods, we had an Urza mirror) was, "Ok, so combo off? Infinite life, infinite thopters, infinite mana?" Can we raise Mishra from the dead to deal with his crazy brother, please?

Lastly, as alluded to in the metagame snapshot above, the number of 4-of's and below was simply astounding. There was a distinct vibe of "play your pet deck" at the event, which is amazing considering how high the stakes were for the event. Despite the competitive spirit that no doubt remained, it was clear to see that most, if not all, the players were also actively intending to have a lot of fun with their favourite deck, which is extremely heartening since, after all, Magic is a card game, and a social one at that. We're glad that you enjoyed yourselves, and we'd also like to thank you for coming and being a part of it.

At the day's end, we had a Top 8 that looked extremely different than what one would have expected after Mythic Championship Barcelona (zero Hogaaks, zero Tron), but then again, there's something to be said for variation in statistics. Ultimately, the one who fought through the entire day's diversity and claimed the Mythic Championship invite for himself was none other than longtime veteran of the local community, Heng Chye Hwee! It doesn't get quite as epic as Manamorphose into Lava Spike face into Bolt blocker into return 2 Phoenixes and swing. He had an extremely good run, and a well deserved victory, and we wish him all the best in Richmond and beyond!

Our extremely handsome Judge team. Thank you all for your help!
