Wizards Play Network Qualifier for PT#1 2020

10th Nov 2019

Games Haven Paya Lebar

After 4 preliminary events, we arrived at our final lineup for our Wizards Play Network Qualifier on Sunday! The winner of this event would qualify for the Regional Players' Tour in Nagoya, the first PT of 2020.

Let's address the elk in the room. For all who want to know, we had 11 Oko decks in the room, and 4 (of slightly different flavours) made it to the Top 8. As far as conversion rate goes, the outcome is more or less to be expected. Deck is strong, elks are everywhere, completely old news. Unlike Tom Hiddleston's Loki, this god of mischief might have overstayed his welcome.

The far more interesting story to be told is how all the other players who weren't playing Food, try to deal with Food. Besides intermittent fasting, the dominance of the Food decks have led to extreme card choices as the metagame has warped around the deck and led to specific maindeck choices to shut down Food.

Noxious Grasp maindeck is old news by now, but we also saw extreme choices like Tomik, Distinguished Advokist to shut down Nissa, and plenty of Aether Gusts maindeck in both Food decks and Simic Flash decks. Fires decks have taken to including singleton (or even two) Mystical Disputes maindeck to counter T2 Okos, and as a result of all this, we see UW control emerging as a prominent force only because Food decks are so prominent.

Sacrifice decks are a recent archetype that has taken off recently, also to combat the ubiquity of Food decks. There is a certain poetry in an archetype revolving around a card named "Witch's Oven" to combat a Food deck, but maybe that's just the anorexia talking. Eliminating every payoff card in your opponent's deck is a tried and true strategy, but of course, there is every possibility that something slips through and you get run over anyway.

Current sentiment at the moment seems to be one or more of the following:

"Food is beatable with my deck but I can't make any mistakes. So still shag."

"Please lah don't want to play so many Food mirrors."

"Aiyah not everyday Sunday not always T2 Oko. Can just chiong and pray."

"Eh we keep on talking about Food now I hungry."

And thus all eyes are pointed to the banlist update on the 18th. Will the Internet get what they want? We'll know next week.

One of the grinders asked the one and only Kelvin Chew before the event what deck he would recommend for the WPNQ. The platinum reply was, "Play Sultai Cat if you want to win."

Doesn't matter if he's in America suffering from jet lag, Kelvin Chew the Magic God is always right. Our winner for the WPNQ was indeed a Sultai Cat Food deck, and our WPNQ winner was Christian Wijaya with a well deserved win! Many congratulations to Christian, and we hope that you achieve all the glory you want in Nagoya next year!
